http://www.dailymail.co....adder-demonstration.html Wonderful, but only if you can spin this out as experiental learning. In every other respect, it's simply a complete farce.

A classic! Mind you Ian, I do sometimes hope that the DM aren't taking too much of an interest in these forums at times!

Marvelous. I did the same training on a ladder only a few weeks ago. However, the trainer was only one to 'fall off the ladder' and at a lower height. Nothing untoward happened. I'm glad I did not see the video first!

DM seem to think you need a hard hat to climb a ladder.......

Ron, there is good reason to wear a hard hat...with a chin strap if you are WAH and no peak. If one slips off a ladder and is hooked on with a carabiner you could hit your head against a wall, or worse, fall off the ladder and land on your head! Hard hats are not just for things dropping from height.

Ray, the only hard hats tested against the scenario you describe are climbing helmets. Standard hard hats have limited protection against lateral impact as would typically be experienced in a fall.

John, there are a wide variety of hard hats that are now available, including climbing helmets, if they are deemed the most suitable for job then there is no good reason not to wear them. It is not a one size fits all industry any more. :) http://www.davronline.co...talogue/safety-hard-hats

Be careful, this could be a fake! As one of the DM poster says he did not have a hard hat when he was on the ladder!

If you watch the actual video - which is embedded at the end of the article, the chap on the ladder is clearly passed a hard hat and puts it on.

I wouldn't think it would make very good viewing as he's on the radio :) Had a guyspeaking about ladder safety. Came across as very practical despite Jeremy trying to lead him into the obvious 'elf and safety stuff'. was followed by a couple of callers expressing the dangers of ladder use. Seemed to be going ok when I stopped listening.

No, the guy who fell off the ladder was working, no sign of a pit bull and there was nobody rowing about paternity...

I'd imagine the guy who posted the clip onto YouTube has had a severe talking to. It's not exactly something you'd like broadcast around the planet.

Interesting to hear Jeremy Vine merrily using the phrase 'Health and Safety Expert' but, what was that label based on?

It's genuine, i've a friend works for Gateshead council and actually witnessed it, (not the filmer). The guy is a know it all, or what we like to call 'character' and believed he didn't need training himself in order to train others... Clearly he required some training! One part the video doesn't show is that when he put the anchoring bolt in the wall, he stood back all self congratulatory and said 'there, that'll not budge!' He gave the strap a tug, the anchor bolt flew out and nearly took his eye out!
