yes... but maybe no :)
http://www.hse.gov.uk/fo...od/oc/200-299/282_28.pdf
the above will tell you all you need to know, in summary YES if it is a control measure under COSHH i.e. if you are using it to reduce exposure to below the WEL for wooddust. (page 31 EH40)
if you have adequate extraction and the WEL is not reached and it is worn for comfort only (maybe generating non respirable dust???) then you might be able to get away with not testing.
however as the law says as low as reasonably practicable I still think you may have too...
So I would say... YES :)

ummmmm..... OK avoiding the obvious answer.
I think bitter is a better test, but some people are unable to taste bitrex. In this case a sweet soln can be used instead.
Someone may have a better answer tho.

Alan,
We tend towards the bitter test. Being cynical theer are always those doing the test that just want it over with and will say they can't taste when they can! the bitter solution tends to result in a grimace so less chance of faking it. (this tip was brought to us ny the kind trainer from 3M!!)
We now use the Arco branded solutions.
