Posted By Tony Kelly I have worked with both Gloucestershire Constabulary and City of London Police for the last three years, presenting Risk Assessment and general health and safety training to police officers and civilian personnel at all levels. While recognising the benefits of IOSH Certificated training, I have always found that a customised approach is more suitable for the type and needs of police delegates. My view is that the 'regular' Managing and Working Safely syllabus needs to be bent beyond its maximum, to get the results you will be needing - i.e. attitude changing / confidence building as well as traditional health and safety knowledge. I have found that the best approach is one of correlating what the officers already do in terms of good practice and showing where this complies with the (what police officers feel as ) 'new' requirements of health and safety law. E.g using scenarios and group exercises to explore ' how we do it here' VS ' what the law requires' - This type of approach you simply do not have time to apply within the syllabus constraints of the IOSH certificated route. If you wish to discuss this further, please feel free to contact me at Safety Transfer 0208 432 0638 TONY KELLY MIOSH
