Hello all
I have a couple of questions for the wiser ladies and gents.
1) I am considering going self-employed at sometime in the near future and am therefore collecting as much information from the net as possible, i.e. Clipart, example risk assessments, teaching notes and policy documents etc.
If I like certain parts of certain documents etc and therefore cut and paste to create my own final templates which may consist the clipart from one source and the notes from another, is this breaching copyright when its downloaded from the Net?.
For example Manual Handling: I have downloaded a number of pictures, example risk assessments, notes and the sorts.
My aim is to create better looking and more user freindly templates for use in the future.
I ask this question due to the fact that safety consultant has previously told me its quite ok to do so. I want to make sure they were not misleading me.
2)What sort of advice can anyone give to someone when starting out on such a venture?
3)Would I need to register with a certification body when doing training or are some training sessions profitable without third party certification and have little effect on insurance premiums or requirements?.
Is there a safety Information Exchange on the web that I can't find or should there be one?.
Please Please Please help.
Thanks Sarah
Whilst I respect the views of others on both sides of the arguments I dont want to get embroiled in discussions about spelling, ethics etc. I am just trying to Improve my documents and make a living like everyone else. And hopefully in the future improve someones working conditions.

We have on offer on our web page www.groveservices.co.uk many documents to down load.
We do not mind if you or any one uses them all we ask is that the source is acknowledged.
Often respond to issues on this forum and others and offer other documents. These we have available, these are generally templates for someone to complete - to date had no issues.
Do exchange other documents with others - inclding power point presentation with a view to help / assist a wider workplace.

Little Helper,
My understanding is that anything posted, or available, on the 'net is in the public domain and, as such, is freely available for use unless otherwise stated.
Jeff has mentioned in his response ackowledgement of source, this is never a bad idea.
Regards
David

The issue of copyright and the net is something I have been involved in as I am currently working on a project involving posting presentations on a website.
Just because something is published on a website it is not free to use. Be warned copyright exists as soon as someone creates something and is owned by them, (or their company if created in worktime). The only time is where express permission is given by the copyright owner that such work can be used.
Napster is a case in point, just because work is on a website, it doesn't mean its yours to use. Music is just like any other work published on the net. It doesn't need little copyright symbols or legal small print to stand up in court.
My advice is to approach the publishers and gain consent, which may have conditions on them, such as a previous posting suggests acknowledging the author, or perhaps using the complete work and not altering or adapting.
If you want to discuss further you can call me, 07769 924412 or email
