I am currently the Health and Safety person for a Housing Association who also provide care for people. I acquired this position as part of the Admin Manager's duties. My role includes policy development, risk assessments, staff awareness training, audits.
A recent audit has suggested that I should look at obtaining some qualifications. Due partly to cost and partly due to the uncertainty with the new NEBOSH Diploma I am looking at other courses - Postgrad Cert in Safety and Risk Management from Strathclyde University and Professional Development Programme Safety Technician/Manager from Stevenson College in Edinburgh.
Does anyone have any experience of either of these courses and suggestions/advice?

I am currently studying the PGCert at Strathclyde Uni. It provides a good level of information on both H&S and the wider subject area of Risk Management. The course is intensive and requires 4,000 word submissions every 2 weeks, in addition to a submitted portfolio (in my experience 20,000 - 25,000 words) for each of the three modules.
Hope this helps.

I did my Part 1 at Stevenson and am still swithering about whether to do the Safety Manager course - heavy assignments, but no exam!!!
I found the tutors at Stevneson helpful and supportive and to get the most out of the course, you would need to make an effort to go to any tutorials. I found these well worth it.
Good luck, whatever you decide.

I started the Diploma in Health and Safety Management at Glasgow Caledonian University this year. P/T from 2pm to about 8ish Wednesdays. 6 modules over 2 years or more 5 of which are examinable and the final module is all course work.
It's a very good course, easy to digest and you get reasonable support from the academic staff.

Hi Jane
I did the course that Graham was mentioning on his response.
I did a lot of research on the internet before choosing the Caley. The course is well structured and presented by tutors who have been in industry and the Law module is taught by lawyers.
I found the academic staff very helpful and always able to help in a crisis. I still have some contact with the course co-ordinator. The good thing about the course is you can begin at any module (except the final module which is all coursework based on the previous 5 modules).
If you are interested in the Caley contact Taylor Bourne at the University and I am sure he will be able to advise you better. He can be contacted at 0141 331 3033 or T.Bourne@gcal.ac.uk. Tell him that I sent you
Good Luck
Kind Regards
Robert Paterson
