Posted By joanne doherty Can anyone out there give me some top tips on starting my health and safety career, I'm due to take my nebosh certificate this month and have applied for dozens of positions from all different websites, agencies with no luck bar one, I'd like to go on and do my diploma aswell but unless i can find a company to take me on as a junior and allow me to do the course i couldn't afford it. So if there is anyone out there that wants a cheap junior that can make damn good coffee as well by the way!! please get in touch.

Posted By Peter Lee Hi Joanne, you've decided to forge a career out of Health and Safety, are you insane ? Seriously, the NEBOSH Cert is a good start for you however you will most certainly need a higher qualification such as the NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent to achieve a full time position in Health and Safety. Good luck whichever route you take, it will all be worth it in the end.

Posted By Peter J Harvey You are correct in that not a great deal of "starter" roles seem to crop up, however if you keep an eye on www.jobsgopublic.com they do come along in the public sector. You might also like to have a look at some other industry specific area such as University job sites, it seems, not surprisingly that employers don't like to spend on advertising more junior roles. Hope this helps.

Posted By Richy I am also starting my health and safety career. However I have made various mistakes nameley running before I can walk. Therefore my advice would be this. * Look for high risk or generalist experience areas * Make sure it is a mentored/supported position * Aim to be a small cog in a big engine (team player) * Do not specialise too early hope this helps. Kind Regards Richy Marriott

Posted By Paul Parry Have you thought of doing an NVQ4 in Health and Safety Practice to gain a better qualification?. I did mine through Woolverhampton College at a very good price £380 contact Ken Davis 01902 317512, he was my tutor/assessor. His standards are high and this shows in the City & Guilds top excelence rating he / they have achieved. You can do it anytime and it would not cost too much, I self funded it when I did mine. Although you need lots of good experience and obviously a job to do this, I strangely found it quite a learning route. Getting your foot on the ladder is hard work but once your on the world is yours !. I left the RAF last year and found it hard to get on the ladder but with help from people (inc Peter J Harvey)I found the right job for me. Good luck
