Posted By AMANDA MALONEY My name is Amanda Maloney, I have just completed a BSc Geography degree at Queen Mary College, University of London. I am looking to pursue a career within Health and Safety and am just about to start the NEBOSH Construction Certificate course. Basically I am just trying to find out whether or not that this is the best route to get in to Health & Safety, and are there any individuals that would be willing to help with providing any type of work experience, so that I'll be able to achieve a better understanding of the theory. I'm based in hertfordshire and am willing to travel. So if anybody could help or give me any advice it would be very much appreciated.

Posted By Christopher Wills I am not an expert on the courses around or particularly what they cover, but I think that it would be better to do the NEBOSH General Certificate first, rather than going down the Construction Certificate route. The NEBOSH General will give you an overview of the subject matter and open up the field of h & s to you, rather than the more narrow field of Construction. After this then you can look to specialise, and in the SHP and on the employment agency websites, there seems to always be a requirement for h & s specialists. It might be worth looking into getting some h & s work experience prior to doing a course to see if this is the route you want to take as well. Chris

Posted By Tracey Arnold Well my comment would be to do the Construction certificate, because that's all everyone seems to be looking for at the moment is Construction experience so I think you are on the right track. I have the general and 2-3 years experience and it's getting me nowhere fast at the moment!

Posted By Geof I'm not sure doing the Construction Certificate first is a very good idea - unless you already have a good grounding in H&S. My feeling is some of the Construction Course will be unintelligible unless you have already taken something like the General Certificate first and grasped the basic concepts.

Posted By Kelvin George Amanda From what I am led to believe the Construction Certificate Course would only make sense to you if you had experience in Construction work. If you have that then go for it otherwise you could do the Nebosh Certificate or new/old diploma, the Nottingham Uni degree or other various h&s quals. In the end it probably depends how long you are prepared to study before you get a full time job because the new diploma takes 18 months, the old diploma takes 2 years - to get the full diploma - and I think the Nottingham Uni takes 3 years but could be wrong about that. Anyway which ever route you take all the best and let people know because a lot of us have information useful to specific courses and some are willing to share. Cheers Kelvin
