I am currently working for the education department risk assesing pre 16 work placements. I have IOSH and I am just starting NEBOSH certificate. I would like to expand on this and my future career. Has anyone any suggestions as to what I should do next or any career suggestions. I do like working within education, but realise my career is limited here.

There are quite a few companies undertaking pre-16 workplacement assessments and there is a growing demand for such expertise as part of the Government's "Welfare to work scheme". I would suggest you complete your NEBOSH Cert and then move on to the Diploma or equivalent. This will give you a much broader coverage and enable you to undertake other Occpational Safety Services outside of the Education Sector.
As a company,we undetake a varied range of H&S work for the education sector and are considering taking on pre-16 workplace assessment as part of our services. I would be interested to hear from you on this matter to understand a bit more about the process, how long it takes to undertake an assessment and what standard criteria is used other than general premises safety and H&S Management.

Hello I have just left employment with a College of Further Education to live on the IOW. I found that my previous employment as a health and safety adviser in education gave me a wide range of experience as the College covered Hair and Beauty, Art and Design, Construction, Science, IT, etc. Most of my work was taken up with writing policies and with doing workplace assessments - with a staff of 1500 people there was always a demand. Since you have been doing assessments on young people, this might stand you in good stead as what i have found is that the College was not very good in organising workplace assessments for new starters (of whatever age). In addition, there will be work experience students to assess etc. It very much depends on what area you decide to go into, but if you want to stay in education and get a varied H&S range, then my suggestion would be to send your CV to Colleges, Schools (private and state) and to LEAs and Councils. I hope this is of use to you and good luck in your future career and with your Certificate.
