Posted By Sonia Thomas Hello I am a Quantity Surveyor (QS) and Union health and safety officer considering a move into health and safety full time. I hold the NEBOSH General Certificate and am studying for the Diploma Part 1. Has anyone any suggestions as to what I should do next or any career suggestions to progress. Ideally I would like to stay within construction. Should I do the Construction Certificate and what are people's opinions on planning supervisors and health and safety. Lots of questions, I know but I am at a bit of a crossroads on whether to QS or do H&S. Many Thanks Sonia

Posted By Ian Edwards Sonia,   Like yourself I am a CQS who has over the past few years specialized in H&S, starting with the General and then the Construction Cert. I found that the Construction cert focused and opened my eyes to the H&S issues within the construction industry, this led me to sit the NTU Diploma and gain my MIOSH accreditation. I am currently employed in a multidisciplinary design office and carry out planning supervisor role, I also find myself undertaking more H&S duties due to my training. My advice would be to complete your diploma (which i am sure is tough going), then if your still in the mood to study, the construction cert. Most construction related job adverts ask for this. I also feel that my QS background is invaluable in preparing Pre-tender H&S plans and Contract documentation.   Good luck Ian

Posted By Ian Jones I have just completed the new construction certificate and would say if you have completed the general certificate then the construction is not worth doing.

Posted By ken mosley Having worked in the construction industry for 39 years in numerous roles as engineer, project manager, regional manager and group HSE manager with a MSc in constr.man. and NEBOSH cet., Dips 1&2, I feel qualified to offer the following advice in the form of a choice. If you want job satisfaction albeit with no glory become a safety practitioner. If you want a higher salary than most in the industry stick with being a QS. Please excuse the cynicism but that is the blunt reality.

Posted By brian green Go for it, the NEBOSH construction looks an excellent course and is obviously recognised by industry, dont be put off by the CDM part, plenty of info on the HSE website for a start regarding Designer obligations, principal contractors, clients, control of contractors etc etc, why not go for RSP status, best of luck Brian Green MIOSH (about to go RSP)
