Advertising a vacancy in SHP, way over priced!!

Hi All,
Not sure what experience others have had of advertising in SHP. I placed an advert for a Health and Safety Advisor for our business about 9 months ago, I received a reasonable response but certainly not a flood of candidates.
We're just about to look for another Advisor in the coming month, so we've looked to SHP again for our advertising. But I was quite taken aback by the recent costs of advertising in the journal, their rate card suggests almost £3500 for a full page!!
At these prices in makes this forum look like a complete giveaway, and (never thought I would say this) recruitment consultancies almost cheap!
Has anyone else experienced the recent rise?
Is it not in IOSH's interest to keep the journal cheaper?

The answer is staring you in the face.
Advertise here and send a donation to a charity to offset.
I've used this site twice and found a very high quality response. Bonus is that it is much quicker - within 2-3 days and I've had the CVs on my desk.

Yes SHP, is expensive to advertise in (although I know of other industries where it costs two or three times as much to advertise in the Trade papers) but the bulk of the costs of the editorial is paid for by advertising - less advertising mean less editorial.
Given the fact that it is a successful tool for both agencies and direct employers the publisher can afford to charge a premium as they will always fill the advertising section.
This forum is a great tool given its limitation but there is also a place for SHP and Agencies (of course we only charge if we fill the role :) ).

Dear Moderator,
Who was advertising services etc, against your giudelines?
This thread was purely to air my frustration at what seems to me to be a 'cornered' market for the publishers of SHP.

Given typical estimates of the cost of recruiting a professional in terms of management time etc, the cost of an ad in the practitioner is a relatively small proportion.
I took out a quarter page in 1998 when I wasn't sure whether I wanted a MIOSH or a new Graduate. Hence relatively loose person spec.
160 applications.
Worked. We took on a MIOSH AND a brand new graduate. Both still with us albeit both currently on maternity leave.
Both now MIOSH RSP.
Have also successfully used this forum to find staff.
So it's a question of horses for courses, depending on who you are looking for and why.

I placed an advertisement on here for some insurance surveyors to assist me on a programme of work. I placed the ad on a Friday and had to close it on the Sunday because I had been inundated with CV's many of which were very good.
The practitioner is a good place to advertise in the right circumstances but if you want a quick response at no cost then this forum is the place to place.

The SHP would be much more "expensive" to IOSH i.e. its members & direct SHP subscribers if it was not for the revenue from all types of advertisements-products, services and jobs.
It would be interesting to know how many IOSH members & others actually make use of the career discussion forum for vacancies direct from employers.

The SHP is published by CMP Information Ltd and the only area for which IOSH is responsible is the IOSH interface section, formerly IOSH news. The rate card is set by CMP and is not under our control. All jobs featured in the SHP are now also posted on www.shponline.co.uk/jobs.asp and means advertisers do not have to wait for SHP publications date.
The Careers Forum is for those who are trying to decide on a first career in health and safety, as well as established practitioners who may want to discuss opportunities to extend their professional development. It is not designed to be a recruitment site and is aimed at promoting career development.
As a by-product of this, individuals can post information about jobs with their own organisations, providing it's not for commercial gain i.e. as indicated in the Acceptable Use Guidelines, it is not for use by recruitment agencies or their employees.
