To whoever it may concern,
My name is Martin Callaghan I'm 19 years old and currently a landscape gardener for a company called city facilities management which carries out all the maintenance work for all the ASDA stores around the country. I have just successfully passed my NEBOSH national general certificate am planning to do the NEBOSH diploma once i have found a trainee job in the profession, i have also just be accepted as an affiliate of iosh.I am looking for my first job in this profession and am willing to do whatever it takes to become a fully qualified and experienced health and safety advisor. Could you please let me no if this is possible. I will also send my CV.

Martin, I am only fairly new to Health and Safety and I also hold the Nebosh Certificate, but only that and have no plans to go any further at present as my main job is as an Engineer and I cannot see any career/salary advantage to study any further as I am already probably at the top of my earnings potential. To earn more than £25,000 in H+S you have to have at least the Diploma 1 + 2 or a degree.
My own opinion really only gained from this forum over several years is that The Certificate and not really considered as very much at all within IOSH, it is really only a starting qualification and very few employers are going to take you on full time with only that qualification and no experience.
So my advice for what it's worth is keep on studying get your Diploma 1+2, as you are only 19 you have plenty of years on your side.

General Certificate is the starting level in the H&S world - but we all have to start some where!
I remember when I only had the Gen Cert.
You can get jobs with a Gen Cert, obviously not the highest paid in the world of H&S, but see it as part of your 'apprenticship'
As with any career, there is a distinct career ladder and qualification levels.
So well done with getting the Gen Cert, remain positive and you will get a H&S job - if you put the effort in you will get a job paying better than £25k.
This is what H&S needs, young blood, not more of the usual boring old farts - banning Christmas Parties and playing conkers.

Hi Martin, congratulations on passing your NEBOSH National General Certificate. Contrary to the belief of many that give advice on this open forum, many companies do take on trainees. However, you need to address which area of health and safety you intend to focus on as a future career.
As an example, I work within the construction sector (and have done so for the last 10 years or more). You need to focus on an area that is of interest. There are so many areas and sectors to choose from - nuclear, railway, teaching, consultancy, construction etc. Many of these specific sectors do pay significantly more than general areas. The question you need to ask yourself is which area you have an interest in and why?
My view is that the best way to learn is to work with experienced Health and Safety Practitioners and simultaneously further you’re academic knowledge, for which there are many routes – ie not just the NEBOSH Diploma.
