Posted By S.Alder Hi Lucinda, you may want to start with the general certificate and then proceed to the diploma once you have some experience. You could also go down the British Safety Council route i.e. certificate followed by Dip.SM but this is not as highly regarded in some quarters. Would suggest that you contact a reputable training company for advice.

Posted By Robert Weiland Hi Lucinda I came out of University from studying Business with a Degree. But after being involved with Health and Safety from Supermarket where I worked as student for 7 years I found it hard to get the recognition. I had been trained by the Union in place and had taken many Health and Safety courses. I was directed to the NEBOSH General Certificate and took that at the local college and found it to be very good in terms of gaining basics of many fields. Once I had passed that I found it much easier to get interviews etc and found employment with a major furniture retailer where I now hold Health and Safety Advisor role. I sort the day to day stuff and have external consultant for the bigger issues where I can work alongside and can further information /experience. I would suggest that the General Certificate is a good starting place on the ladder in order to start to establish a role within Health and Safety. Good Luck !!
