Does any council have any local authority run vert-ramp (half pipe)skateboarding/BMX facilities? Have there been any problems particularly with regard to accidents and subsequent claims?,

Jean,

You could try Stroud District Council, Gloucestershire.

They have a skateboard ramp in Stratford Park in Stroud, which my 13 year old son regularly uses.

Their Health and Safety at work Department phone number is 01453 754478 or their Leisure Enquiries Department 01453 754333.

Further information regarding the safety of skateboard parks can be obtained from :-

Institute of Leisure and Amenity Management Tel:- 01491 874800

Association of Play Industries
Tel:- 024 7641 4999

There are no specific statutory constraints relating to the design of the skateboard park, although a general duty of care would apply.

Hope this will be of some use.

Jean,
We have a very extensively used skateboard park here at Crawley. It is located behing the main Leisure Centre. I have been involved for some time with our LS Officer who is responsible for its development.
To date we have had no accidents, other than very minor ones. We have been visited by many other LA who are proposing (apprehensively) to have a site.
Go for it ! It reduces the risk of injury to members of the bublic on the streets. We have had a thousand through in a day !
Get a Design Plan done, use proper quality materials and undertake daily inspections to drive maintenance. You'll find the older kids will take inspection on board and report defects, which is to be encouraged as part of their development.
