does anyone know of any agencies that can supply asbestos specialists in the midlands area? mainly for survey work, however ID experience would be preferable.

Thanks in advance....

Leigh,

You need to contact an independant analytical laboratory (an environmental consultant usually). However be aware that they need to have strict quality assuarance procedures, such as accreditation to EN 45004 for surveying (i think this is a draft standard), EN 45001 for the anaylitical mathods employed, ISO 17025, ISO 9001, ISO 9002, in house QA checks etc.

Usually accreditation to UKAS (united kingdom accreditation service - Tel:0208 178406, www.ukas.co.uk) will provide the appropriate qualification. However be aware of HSE licenced Asbestos removal contractors who will also provide the service. I have heared various tales form bulk sample results being made up to generate removal contracts to no analysis taking place. nevertheless aslong as the results are provided from an appropriatly accredited laboratory, any "competent" persons can take bulk samples.

Generally it is a good idea to employ the services of an independant analytical laboratory (competent for surveying, bulk sample id, air monitoring and project management etc.) and leave only the removal to the HSE licenced contractor. This way you will recieve impartial advice and results.

Regards

Richie

Asbestos surveys should be carried out by people with adequate knowledge, training and experience. Sources of such expertise include the DIRECTORY OF OCCUPATIONAL HYGIENE CONSULTANTS produced by the British Institute of Occupational Hygienists (01332 298087) (BIOH), Asbestos Testing and Consultancy (01245 269336) (ATAC) who are a division of ARCA (Asbestos Removal Contractors Association)
