What are the requirements for fire doors in corridors of older educational buildings should they be self closing or linked to the fire alarm system wherby they close automatically upon an emergency?

The requirement isn't really an 'either/or'. If self-closing doors have been required (either under the Education (School Premises) Regulations or the Building Regulations as appropriate - and now also by fire risk assessment under the Fire Precautions (Workplace) Regulations), they have to remain effectively self-closing - except that magnetic door holders may be acceptable provided that they activate to allow the doors to close when the fire alarm sounds. With boarding schools it has been recommended that such doors should be closed at night.

Hallo Julie

I'd recommend you get hold of a copy of the DFEE Guide 6, Managing School Facilities - Fire Safety. It costs £8.50 from the Stationery Office (ISBN 0112710409). We've just formally adopted it with our local Fire Brigade as our standard and it's very helpful.
