Posted By PETER GANNAWAY Just in case I have missed it, can anyone tell me where we are with the draft Smoking in the workplace ACOP circulated a few months ago. My organisation is looking at revamping its policy, and I have suggested that the draft ACOP may be a good place to start. Secondly, does anyone have a policy or better yet undertaken a Risk Assessment for staff required to enter "smoke rooms" to clean as part of their duties.

Posted By Brian Houghton Peter, I cannot answer any of your questions directly but I did notice an article in the most recent Journal of the Royal Society of Health on this subject. I think that this might be of help to you. If you are interested, please email your postal address and I will send a copy. Brian Houghton

Posted By Ken Taylor I've hesitated about responding to this one - not wanting to ignite another contraversy and upset the moderators. I believe that the position is that we are still waiting for the HSE guidance. As to cleaning smoking rooms, if adequate air extraction is installed, the operation should be able to be carried out safely after sufficient time has elapsed for a complete air change when use of the room has ended (ie evening or, better still, before smoking commences in the morning.

Posted By Richard Just for the record, I do not permit non-smoking cleaners to clean smoking rest rooms unless they have actually expressed a willingness to do so i.e. a positive act, not just by inertia or default, nor do I permit such areas to be used as transit corridors to other areas Richard
