How can one verify that an area is "clean" after a large chemical spill? Is there any equipment available or a standard proceedure?

There was a company at the NEC this week exhibiting a strip, similar to the one you may have seen in your GP's for Urine testing, which indicates the presence of Strong acids, alkalis etc.- I'll forward the company's details if you like.
