Posted By David Martin Many industries store 205ltr barrels ( full ) on wooden pallets with a maximum loading capacity of around 1000kgs. Whilst this is not a problem I have noticed that it appears to be standard practise to stack three or even four layers high ( and therefore go over the weight limit of the bottom pallet ). Has anyone out there done a risk assessment on this? Does anyone have any examples of incidents which have happened due to pallet stacks collapsing?

Posted By Robert Woods HSE PM15 revised safe use of wooden pallets and HSE's HS[G]76 health and safety in retail and wholesale warehouses may be of some assisstance. If the pallet has a load limit then to go above that limit would be negligent. Depending on where the stacked pallets are stored there could also be a hazard caused by the restiction of vision. There has been several legal cases along these lines Bob Woods Keighley Worksafe.

Posted By Stuart Nagle I would suggest that the supplier/manufacturer of the palletised goods may be able to assist in providing the information on the suitablity, or not, of stacking and the hights acceptable and strengths/weaknesses of the contaners in these situations. it may be worth contacting them.
