I am interested to know whether any Councils have undertaken manual handling assessments for work involving kerbstones.
If so, I'd be grateful if you could let me know what mechnical aids or work methods you have used to reduce the need to lift / handle / lower the kerbstones.

There is an HSE publication, "Backs for the future : safe manual handling in construction" HS(G)149 that has a case study in placing of kerbstones. It has been a problem, but there are custom made devices avialble for 2 persons to lift & place them in position--obviously sfter a full manual handling risk assessment.

Birmingham City Council may be a good bet for such assessments following the case taken against them by the HSE in 1999 or 2000(see Safety Management magazine - October 2000)
