Just out of general interest, i saw an advert in my local paper for construction workers required. One of the requirments was that you provide your own safety boots and hard hat. Are they allowed to do that, i thought they would be obliged to provide essential safety equipment?

If you read the small print it probably has some "get out" clause which treats them as self employed!

If the advert asks for 714 - 715 certificate [I think i've got the numbers right] then they are treated as self employed.
If they are to work for an agency i'ts a grey area which the goverment intends to clarify by making the agency the employer.
This sort of ambiguity is the reason that there are so many deaths in the construction industry.
