We currently use T20 Stand On electric picking trucks ( a small form of fork lift but with a very limited load height ). Our approach to training has been to certificate new operators in house using a "competent" fork lift driver. What is the general approach to this? Is it more appropriate to send operators away for training with a certified independant training body?

Hi David
We use a lot of T20's and similar, we have had people trained as trainers to provide the correct level of training for these vehicles, L117 is the relevent ACOP that covers the training requirements, and states "training should only be given by someone who has undergone appropriate training in instructional techniques and skills" ACOP6
I would interpret that to mean that you could not just get an experienced driver to do the training.

As a qualified Instructor in Forklift Trucks,Electric Pedestrian Pallet Trucks I would suggest that any member of your staff who carries out such training should possess a relevant qualification. Which should be obtained through a recognised govering body,R.I.T.T.B or similar. As this will provide the selected trainer with the knowlege and understanding to identify the risks involved when using this type of equipment.
