Does anybody have and is willing to share, a glove policy.
We are trying to reduce hand injuries. The policy is to be used in conjunction with attempts to engineer out sharp edges etc.
Many thanks

There is an HSE information sheet -EIS 16
"Preventing injuries from the manual handling of sharp edges in the engineering industry"
It has useful information, including measures other than PPE. It also includes the use of PPE and to a limited extent, on Gloves.

Don't have a policy but do have an experience. Had a site that was having lots of hand injuries and had to sort it. Engineering measures are ok but take time which we didn't really have.
I first established the usage level of PPE. It was dire. Once investigated it turned out to be the gloves were so cheap the dye came out and turned everyones hands red, not popular. Lack of grip was another good one and the much unknown abrasiviness on the nose from the back off the glove in cold weather!!!
We ran some trials with the assistance of a local supplier and came up with three types of glove. We allowed each operative 2 pairs every so many months, I can't remember exactly.
The trick was this. They liked the gloves and would wear them, but they cost more. They liked them so much they started taking them home and selling them to other contractors! The issue was therefore 2 pairs at a set period or exchange upon returning damaged pair. Stolen or lost and you got the old type back and had to make do.
It worked really well, people got what they wanted and once issued with decent kit they looked after it once they realised that there was a limited supply. There was always PPE but for those who used it and looked after it, there was better PPE.
Hope this helps
