Posted By Ian J B Morning all..
Hoping from some collective wisdom if possible. I work at a training centre where, for two afternoons a week our delegates go either climbing or caving. Whilst we have a good level of accident reporting, a comment was raised recently about having accident books that go to site with the instructors, this would then enable them to fill out the records on site and avoid missing details later. We already send the teams away with a comprehensive first aid kit which is stored in a waterproof case and my initial reaction was to just add one of our existing accident books to the kit. The reply to this was that very often accidents happen when the weather isn't at it's most helpful, so I'm considering creating an in house version on waterproof paper. I've obviously got our existing books to work from as a starting point but would appreciate any guidance on what others have done

Posted By SteveD-M Ian I would go for the in house version as it is specific to your needs. You are not forced to have the official accident book as has been debated here many a time.

Posted By Bob Shillabeer Why take the accident book with you. There is not enough space to record a comrehensive record of what happened anyway. Just take a note book and record as much as you can about the accident and then produce a report of the circumstances. Accident investigation is nothing to do with recording the incident in the accident book. They have a different purpose.

Posted By Ian J B Thanks for the replies both..
I appreciate your thoughts Bob, would you advise giving guidelines for the report or let it stay at the individuals discretion? likewise would you then advise following up with the accident book or stick with the report?

Posted By SteveD-M You don't need to the use the official forms so long as you include:
Full name address and occupation of injured person Date and Time of Accident Place where accident has happened Cause and nature of injury Name address and occupation of person making the report if other than the injured person.

Posted By Paul D From memory you only need to provide an accident book for employees use. Are the people you are training employees if not use what ever you want to record accidents/incidents.
