Ive been asked a question....
At the moment an organisation (visiting various sites to undertake fabrication works) has a paperbased Risk Assessment system.
Every site is different and the work activity varies (grinding, welding, drilling etc).
The manager feels he doesnt have the time for a risk assessment each and every time. Ive made comment that he needs to assess the risk of each work activity as the site and the hazards varies.
Does anyone know of another way (e.g. RA software for a PDA) or anything else ??
Or even if im barking up the wrong tree !!!!

There are a number of products on the market that can be tailored to meet your needs.
Regardless of whether he has time to do them or not, it is a legal requirement even if it is only a one off or temporary job.
There are plenty of prosecutions that have occured with such things as this happening and not necessarily within this type of environment and the cases have been centered around no adequate risk assessments in place.

There are plenty of packages that will let you setup standard assessments, I’m not sure is all will let you copy and amended to include specific details… this should be a good compromise for the manager, but possibly his attitude to doing the assessments needs addressing first.
Check out Warwick, SHE & Rivo for starters.

While the activities vary as do the sites there must be common significant hazards that can be captured. At one of teh companies I worked for I was asked to produce a document pack to cover different activities but a similar circumstance.
I went down the gneric significant risk by activity and site type then the uncaptured risks were assessed on the day by the people attending site and submitted at the end of the working day duley signed off by all those that had attended site.
Once you start looking for commonality it is surprising how much there will be. The documnt pack will get quite large at first but as you look deepr documents can be combined to reduce the volume.
Good luck with it.
