Hi guys.
Here's one for friday I know its early but it gives us all chance to ponder. OK! Being the originator of Am I too Old? I think this site could do with another thought for friday for us all to chill out a bit. Anyway, do we ever switch off? do we turn a blind eye when we are Off-Duty?, or when retired do we get on our high horse and ranter away about workers, contractors, scaffolders etc doing thinks wrongly. What have we witnessed while off-duty? do our wives suffer the 'Victor Meldrew' or 'Grumpy Old Men' syndromes? can we ever switch Off?

Ian.

On the Victor Meldrew front, I know my wife & kids call me Vic in honour of the above when they think I'm out of ear shot - can't understand why?

try to switch off - don't get me wrong.. i do notice things.. its what im trained for but i won't look for problems (i have known safety pros to be in a hotel looking for PAT stickers!)

But i am guilty of pointing something out to Mrs safe system when on holiday if it is really bad... that usually gets a groan... but on hols im usually engaging in some form of extreme sport.. so can't grumble to much!

I don't think we do, I've just come back from skiing in Bulgaria. I saw 3 guys being carried in the bucket of a JCB and shook my head and then thought but I'm on holiday!

I've been accused by friends of being obsessed with scaffolding, and by my partner of being obsessed with fire doors. So I suspect my answer has to be "no"!

I must admit, staying in a B&B t'other week, I got up in the morning, opened the curtains and said "ooh look, scaffolding"...so I suspect she may be right.

(And I'm not even in construction)

Does any professional or amateur come to that ?? How often do you see "arrested by an off duty police officer" and don't gardeners or farmers look at other peoples crops?? What do busmen look at on a Busman's holiday.
Is there a relationship between those that shop and those who window shop when the shops are closed etc. Do professional footballers watch football on the TV.
I guess the measure is how stressed we get by it all -- too much and we risk losing friends and our own sanity !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

err.... well i finished work at 6:30pm and I'm looking on the IOSH Site....maybe the answer should be no!!

Like the other member I have a thing for MEWPS!!! in particular cherry pickers. I drive past a hire shop everyday for work and there they are all lined up!!!

Think I may need a visit to the doctor, because like Paul I don't work in Construction!

I don't switch off, I just refuse to do anything about safety when I'm not working unless it would have a direct effect on myself, family or friends.

I think the general answer would be no..

Safety for me is 100% of my behaviour all of the time. Sounds a bit too serious for a Friday. However coming from the Billy Connelly school of safety management you have to sometimes just shake your head and laugh..so long as the risk levels are low!!

When on holiday tho' - the pictures of risky behaviour have to come from somewhere!

Got my best scaffolding picks from India! What's the SWL of bamboo again...?

Waiting to be served while standing at a pub bar the other week I found myself checking out their smoke detectors, fire extinguishers and emergency exits.

How sad is that?

Some time ago I was in Zanzibar, and we took a local guided trip and the local guide pointed out the house where Doctor Livingstone lived and where he planned his trips into Africa. Everyone rushed for their cameras. Next door was being refurbished and the scaffolding was somewhat different to what we are used to (polite description so moderators weekend is not disturbed)so I took several pictures as you would. Guide came along length of bus and gently turned me around much to amusement of rest of bus and dismay of my wife. Enough said !!

Always check where the fire and extinguishers are when I stay away, also check when they were last inspected....

Also check how clean the matress and bedding is before I stay somewhere, but that's just my OCD!

Even before I got involved in this H&S gig, I was obsessed with finding emergency exits (I used to have recurring nightmares of being trapped in a fire in a certain club in Glasgow with only 1 exit, down a rickety staircase!!)

Now I am involved, I find myself checking scaffolding (I'm not involved in construction, but strangely fascinated), emergency procedures/fire door integrity/escape via windws from hotels (also pillows and under beds, for reasons I won't expand on here lol), excavations & skips, window cleaners......

And I even had a tut-tut moment in a certain upmarket supermarket when I noticed that their fire evacuation signage sent everyone in totally random places.....

nice one ciril,
answer is no, hence the time of night posting this hahaha.
ironically I also live near an EHO and he is called Victor!!!
Even on the roads I know it gets to me the road rage idiots, those who create it I mean with crap driving, I sometimes wish I was a policeman and not in safety, as it can be frustrating when we dont have ALL the powers to exercise idiots repremanding at times! Sorry did someone just shout my neighbour, or was that meant for me lol.

Regards,
Mike

I thought I did switch off. But yesterday at my dentists I used the customer toilet. Being that there was no reading material available, I noticed a signed fire exit door from the loo.

All very well for the person using that facility, but along with 99.9% of punters, I locked the door thereby cutting of that route for others.

Should I say something? Bearing in mind the dentist was about the do unmentionable things to my teeth and gums, and remembering Laurence Olivier's character in the film 'Marathon Man', I decided not to!

"Is it safe?" It will do!!

I have to admit to questioning how the safety drill was carried out on our last cruise, and it bothered me so much I emailed them with suggestions on how to improve the drill as soon as I got home. So no hope here......

I try not to switch off at work cos the bosses and hse can hand out some stiff punishment.
