Good morning everyone,

I have just had my long-delayed appraisal, and one significant thing that has come out of it is that the company wants to become their Dangerous Goods Safety Adviser. I am pretty happy about this to be honest, but from talking to a friend the other day, i was warned that achieving the necessary DGSA qualification involves a studying an extremely large amount of literature and can take a long time.

I don't intend to start the DGSA course until late in the year (if the company is still around by then :-( - no joke), so my questions/pleas are:

- Has anyone please got any material that could give me a gradual introduction into the topic, which i could have?

- Has anyone got any advice on good training providers in the north/north-west of England?

- Any tips on the getting the qualification?

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks,

bereznikov

Have you been in touch with the Chemical Hazard Communication Society> Try CHCS.org

They should be able to give you advice and guidance.

bereznikov,
There is indeed a lot of literature primarily the UK regulation and the ADR books (2) the exams are open book with a list of approved books you are allowed to take into the exam. You don't need to know these books cover to cover, you do need to know how to use them though.

The first time I took the exams I had a three day course, on refreshing the qualification I just took the exams it was easier the second time as I had been using the books over the previous years.

Good luck anyway.

I can't help with training providers in your area but the exams are run by the Scottish Qualifications Authority on behalf of the DFT. You can obtain information on their website follow this link www.sqa.org.uk/sqa/1570.html there are sample papers you can download just to see what you would be up against on the day of the exam.

Chris,
Thanks for that, I have sent an email request to join the forum their and have been looking at the CHCS website and it looks pretty useful.

Iain,
That is reassuring thank you, I was worrying a bit about the amount of stuff I would have to remember, but if it is a more of knowing how to use the books, I think I plan a lot of practise at work before the exam. Thanks.

Carl,
That’s great! I have been on the website, and downloaded a few sample papers, and will download the syllabus closer to the time, just in case it changes before I enrol on a course.

Gotogmca,
Thanks for the mail, I will look into them, and thanks for the information. I will probably mail you soon.

Thanks everyone
