Morning all,
I have a new build with a roof access hatch and ladder attached. We have (or soon will have) additional grab rails in the access hatch void, but we have an issue as to grab/safety rails to aid the user in the actual act of exiting the hatch void and being on the roof. What would you expect to be an adequate provision? Do any users have guidance note, ACOP's, regulations?
This is not for movement on the roof, that has already been sorted, it is just for the climbing in and out of the hatch.
All help gratefully received.

A number of phone operators have the same issue, and use a push-up extending metal pole mounted alongside the ladder, so once the hatch is opened the pole can be extended to provide a simple hand-hold. Nothing fancy, and often fabbed in-house or by whoever made the ladder.
Strictly speaking there should be something, as a ladder climber must always have "adequate means of support" even at the top rung. If you're going to fall, it'll be when you're trying to get back down and feeling for the first rung...

As these "loft" type ladders don't normally extend the requisite 5 rung/ 1 metre of so past the resting point, then yes you need some additional "grab" feature to assist with access and egress.
This could be as simple as 2 vertical poles either side of the ladder hinge side, or an adaptation to the ladder stiles themselves.
The other issue I guess would be the risk of falling (persons/objects) once the person is up there. This can be a real issue in tight spaces. The "trap door " approach used in system or zip-up scaffold systems might work for you?
The ladder/access system designer or supplier may have a ready solution for you and should be worth a call?
