Silly, I know, but on the One Show tonight John Seargent was watching potato crisps being measured for "crunchiness" and "mouth feel"

Safety glasses were being worn.

Why ?

Perhaps they were Salt & Vinegar flavour, nasty if they get in your eyes. Hope they had a COSHH assessment as well.

Did they carry out a suitable and sufficient crisp assessment?

Didn'tsee it but could the glasses be to prevent potential eye infection getting to the foodstuff?

After the show i went straight to my stash of UVEX ultravision goggles, adorned them, then got stuck right into my salt 'n' shake. The kids have been given a pair each for school tomorrow as well! unfortunately i failed to assess the probability of lacerations from exposed broken crisps and consequently have just returned from casualty. We live and learn!

People have quite clearly missed the real issue! What about that all that crunching! Surely ear defenders at least, or an immediate ceasation of all that crunching!

But with crunchy foods, the main noise problem is bone conduction so ear defenders are ineffective!

This is "elf and safety" gone made.

I think IOSH should respond by sponsoring the World Crisps Munching Championships. In fact, the presidential team might well be assembling a couple of teams at The Grange right now!!

I think sometimes companies rely on their H&S professionals to create appropriate risk assessments and just follow them to the letter. I know a few H&S "experts" who have absolutely no common sense whatsoever and consistently go OTT with their instructions. They give us good guys a bad name and it really annoys me.

Julie-Anne

PS...I am crisp crunching whilst I repond to this thread without safety goggles. Ahhhh, life in the fast lane!

Guys,

You are forgetting safety shoes. There’s always a chance that a crisp might fall on your foot.

And don’t forget that correct lifting techniques, you don’t want to suffer from musculoskeletal injury.

Have a great long weekend.

Was the crisp testing taking place in a designated eye protection area?

It seems like we are forgetting both the CHIP-stick Regulations 2008 and the Confined Space-Raiders Regulations 1997.

Ciao!

I don’t usually get drawn into this sort of debate preferring instead to read and smile wryly, but on this occasion I couldn’t resist especially as Mike has thrown down a challenge to the presidential team, plus it is a long weekend.

A great idea Mike, but it might cost IOSH a “packet” to get involved in this sort of event.

However my other PT colleagues being the “salt” of the earth that they are, they would, I believe, be up for it. Maybe not so much me as I am probably a little too much of a “crinkly” and not “cut” out for the rough and tumble of such a competition.

Besides, we might just get a “chilli” response from some members and to all intents and purpose find ourselves as not the “flavour of the month” and I certainly wouldn’t want to get “assorted” via this forum. It is time to put the “kettle” on I think and settle down to a nice cup of “oxo” and watch a re run of CHiPs (apologies to those who may be US readers of this forum).

We must not forget that choc and chilli crisps are currently on trial and these could be very irritating to the eyes, almost as much as the star of the adverts perhaps?:-)
