Wonder if anyone can help?

When I was studying for NEBOSH several years ago we were given the example of a small threatre that had been renovated and on the opening day a fire started. One of the issues covered was the way in which people reacted to the fire!

I cannot remember if this was a real example or not. Does anyone have information on this?

Thanks

This was a real life example. A theatre recently refurbished by volunteers. The group had no guidance re H&S, as each individual carried out task in their own 'specialist' area. I am trying to find name of Theatre. From memory there were 5 deaths, the individuals who made their way towards the foyer (the main route they used to access the theatre) went directly to the main seat of the fire. There were alternative exits available, which others did use to escape. Hope this helps.

I remember this case study. I have looked at my notes and we were told it was a fire at the Great Theatre Royal in Exeter in September 1887. It was due a candle being used by the projectionist igniting some drapes. I think from memory that there were a number of issues regarding the design of the building, such as escape routes, construction materials, etc

I'm sure if you googled it you'd find more information.

I dont think the Exeter fire is the example used on NEBOSG Dip course. Not on my course anyway. The Exeter fire caused 180 deaths (approx). The NEBOSH example, there was 5 deaths, much smaller scale. The example given discussed how 15% of people will consider their own situation and make a thought out decision before acting. 15% will freeze. Others will follow same route as they used for entrance, regardless of danger and remainder will follow the crowd. It also focused on the fact that because the theatre was refurbished using volunteers, as there was no one with H&S expertise, the role was not highlighted and no one took responsibility for the H&S within the theatre.

Just spoke to my lecturer - it was a made up scenario! I was convinced it was real. Oh well.

Elliot - I said in my earlier post I was informed by my lecturer that the scenario you were looking for details was actually made up. Going through my notes for something else, I found that the theatre in question was listed as the 'Curzon Arts Centre' in Stanbury. Info Extracted from Stanbury Gazette 27 May 2004. I am still not convinced that this is a real life scenario - I googled it and there are no references to fires?

Good to see that all the training organisations provide the same details!!

Some provided with specific but different details and others advised that made up! Oh well, passed the exams so will not worry anymore!

While some of the scenarios are made up to illustrate the point, the behaviour they are illustrating is very real. People really do react oddly in fire situations - there is both the observation and research to back this up.

I have no idea about the theatre fire, but if it's how people respond in a fire I watched a actual event when i completed the fire safety Nebosh cert. It was afire in Manchester shop were the people just continued to shop despite the fire and were even aloud to enter as the fire was taking hold.
