Hi,

I was asked to fill the Health and Safety position in my company even though I do not have a H&S background (I have some environmental background though). Since then, I have not attended any courses and I have brought this to the attention of my manager. There was no handover from the last guy who handled the H&S dept, no one has got a clear idea of what to do since the last guy worked alone. I am getting frustrated because of lack of guidance and no objectives, I don't want to give up on the role, but instead work hard to make this a success story.

I am very much interested in getting neck deep in Health and Safety and would like any advice about courses that would help me understand managing H&S, QMS systems effectively in my company.
I have currently enrolled for the NEBOSH NGC which i believe is a great platform to start off....

You might consider going along to your local IOSH branch meetings and getting to know some fellow professionals.

Also some site visits to similar sites to see how they manage safety can be very useful in the early days of a H&S career.

Where are you based and what is your industry? Perhaps some of the other contributors may be able to assist?

Thanks for your reply. I am in the oil and gas sector and work for one of the smaller service companies based in Aberdeen.

Best of luck, looks like I cannot help this time however your local IOSH Branch will almost certainly be a good starting point.
