When closing down a construction site the team are asking what level of detail in the Health and Safety documentation is to be kept and how long this must be. Currently we advise all, 12 years. What would other advice be.

If asbestos was present some records have to be kept for 50 years - speak to your local HSE/LA/EA for your area as a starter guide to what you need

Evaluate your day to day records e.g. LOLER; demolition; waste disposal and risk assess the outcome then retain or throw away as per your findings noting any legal requirements to retain certain records

Remember that with Env areas you retain the liability as long as you retain the land and if you want to get rid of the land a buyer will want all relevant records and where you moth-ball H&S & ENV liabilities are still present

Would suggest you talk with the Principal Contractor, and the CDM coordinator is one is appointed as each site has its own specific issues that whoever has ownership (the Client) of the building, or land needs specific information relating to the construct and any residual hazards, maintenance , cleaning or inspections of what you have left
