Just wondering if anybody can provide any advice please.
We have alot of employees working away from their permanent base of work. They do have access to appointed first aiders who are on call, however we are debating whether to send employees on a basic first aid course.
just trying to gather peoples opinions on this as it would be appreciated.

Rik, the details you have provided is rather sparse. Whether someone requires first aid training will depend on a number of factors, 'working away' is not sufficient information in itself. Perhaps the provision of a first aid box in a vehicle or emergency contact arrangements may be more practicable than a first aid course.
Incidentally, Appointed Persons are not qualified first aiders and really not much use.

**eagerly awaits the angry responses from all appointed persons out there who 'aren't much use'** ;-)
I agree (in part) with the above response, it is all dependant on your first aid risk assessment and findings.

I'd have to disagree with the Appointed Persons not being any use. For less than 50 employees in an area it is reasonable to have an Appointed Person.
Also, keep in mind that the training changes in October from 4-days to 3-days and the introduction of an 'Emergency First Aid' course

Lets imagine, I'm working alone and i'm an appointed person. What happens if I collapse due to xyz factor (i'm unconcious). Would I be a useful appointed person.
Read the post carefully

Lets imagine again, I’m working alone and I’m an appointed person. What would happen if I sustain an injury requiring a medical first aid?

If you work alone and are a fully trained First Aider, it also wouldn't make any difference, because you are ALONE.

PS. The initial post does not mention lone working, just remote.

Saz,
I gathered that the post is relating to people working away (lone workers) form base. If they are working in groups, then there's no problem having an apoointed person/first aider.

sorry in my original post i was fairly sparse in the information.
Our workers generally work in pairs, however this is not always possible. They each have first aid kits and we have around 10 first aiders if need be.
My thinking behind providing them with basic first aid training, is because we have tradesman such as electricians and with 200 employees working away from the permanent base I wanted to gauge opinions on what others would do.
your help is appreciated.

For lone workers away from base provide a basic first aid kit and means of communication (if injured and able to use phone this could save life.)
If working on another persons site ensure they know where you are and use their first aiders if necessary.
Useful to provide a basic first aid course for all remote workers then if working in pairs they can cover each other .
Remember first aid is about ensuring someone survives until medical help can be obtained.
All dependant on risk involved in the job obviously.
