Guys and Girls,
Can you please detail what laws come into play when engaging in Demolition works and Removing a small amount of cement based asbestos?
Also, do you have to be a licensed in Demolition to engage in a small amount of it?
What is best practice for a small amount of cement based asbestos?
Main reason being, i do not believe that we should be looking at this and want some legal grounds to take back to the boss.
Thanks!

Ignore the part about asbestos - found my answer on the HSE website.
Small amount of cement based sheeting, less than 1 hour over a 7 day period to remove = Licence not required.

Luke, sounds like the work could be non licensable so in threory any organisation could do it. However, all riks still have to managed and operatives trained. So some companies would use a licenced contractor as it would be comparible in cost. Particularly when adding in the correct transport + licence to carry and disposal requirements. The HSE issue guidance as part of their asbestos essentials range that will help you.

Thanks Roger, I need to double check but i believe some of our guys have been trained in Asbestos removal (need to check certs).
So you think it may be more cost effective to use a contractor that can take away the waste as opposed to train some guys and then have it removed?
Also - do you know the BS for suitable respiratory equipment for this type of work?

Respiratory protection equipment for the type of work i think your describing BS EN 149:2001 classification. Protective equipment provides basic breathing defence, such as filtering half masks to protect against dust and dangerous particles. Respiratory protection devices are referred to by their differing levels of protection: Type 1, 2 or 3 or P1, P2 or P3. P2 protects for expected exposures at up to 10 times the WEL, P3 up to 20 so for asbestos sheet externally P2 could be the one for your team, subject to face fit, best risk assess and follow the HSE guidance!
Experience tells me, it sometimes cheaper to leave it to a licenced contractor, unless you are talking about on or two sheets!
Also check your insurance conditions!!

Hi Roger,
Thats great!
And yes - it is a couple of sheets from a garage roof in a non-residential area. (in fact, there isn't anything around for some miles!)

Most LAs have civic amenity sites (used to be called dumps) where small quantities of AC would be accepted.

It is not the amount of cement ACM but the condition that will determine if it is licensable. The HSE statement is subject to the material being in good condition and the 0.1 f/ml not being exceeded. Also please be aware that the peculiarities of Asbestos |Essentials mean that such as cleaning the vacuum cleaners, if used is in fact likely to need a licence.

Happy days:-):-(

Of course you will already have undertaken the necessary training for your operatives under reg 10 CAR 2006?!!!

Trained - UKATA class 2 - 1 day course - 1 hour asbestos awareness - NOT good enough?
PPE - Type 5/6 fibre proof coveralls
RPE - 1/2 mask with FFP3 fitted and face fit tested
Valid EL insurance to work with asbestos - you may have an exclusion?
You require an ancillary licence to 'empty' type H vacuums
ADR / DG asbestos waste bags?
Transport as hazardous waste with consignment notes
