I have a building that has scaffolding erected around a roof dome and it transpires that the scaffolding has been in place for 14 – 16 months. The company who erected the scaffolding cannot provide me with any documentation in relation to the erecting and ongoing checks (they say a disgruntled employee took them when they left the company).

Due to structural changes within my organisation and as a result several key personnel leaving, it is not known if the scaffolding was erected so work/structural surveys could be carried out or if it was also being used to support the dome!

I have been in contact with a structural engineer to give me their expert opinion on the safety of the structure. I know there are several internal management issues that I need to address and this is being looked into, however, I need to ensure that the scaffolding is safe and would like to employ someone competent to do this.

I could simply call in another scaffolding company to check the scaffolding and give me a report, but I feel that it would be sensible to have someone who is independent to both organisations.

Could anyone recommend a professional body that could insect the scaffolding and produce a report?

I appreciate your thoughts but if i have undersood you correctly....the best person to inspect the scaffold is a qualified scaffolder. They are the experts in their field (despite there being a lot of cowboys).

Choose an independent scaffold company from The National Access and Scaffolding Confederation (NASC)http://www.nasc.org.uk/

If the structural engineer has given the building the all clear then allow the NASC approved scaffolder to inspect it. If he gives it the all clear, then great. If he states that it will need to be re-erected, then so be it. Look at the bright side, then you will have a new paper trail from the date of erection.

If you do want an independent report, then the NASC have a number of information members, usually scaffold designers or training organisations, who also do scaffolding H&S consultancy and inspections. Two that spring to mind are Safety & Access in Nottingham, and Simian in Warrington.

If you have a look on www.nasc.org.uk, use the member coverage area filter under 'find a member' with scaffold designer or scaffold trainer as the business type.

Hope this helps, but if you need any further help let me know.
