Just a quick question to ask your opinion on a small matter discussed at our safety committee meeting yesterday...our colour coding system for loose lifting equipment works quite well for all loose lifting equipment items we have on site and we use coloured insulation tape which is changed for every 6 months period to identify that it has been inspected for use; however, can any one shed some light or experience on if it is best practice to tape over the last period colour or remove all traces of the previous colour altogether? We have our thoughts on which is best, either keep it on to prevent damage to web slings from cutting the tape off and also show history of the equipment OR remove it to avoid confusion going forward. Any insight to this would help greatly... Thanks,

Afternoon, Colour coding - seen all types, from large rupper tags through painting to cable ties and tape. painting does tend to 'spread' on chain, wire rope and around the tallies of slings in an attempt to cover the old colour code to prevent confusion. I would say if you tape apply it around the tags is it then derves a dual purpose (1) ensures that the tag (and therefore id mark) are present and (2) identifies if the equipment is in date. The tape can then be removed at each Thorough Examination every six months without damage. Remember accessories (6mths) and appliances (12 mths) will need to have the colour code changed every six months or the code will become invalid.
