The UK Contractors Group require that from January 2010 all supervisors working on their sites need to be able to demonstrate that 1) they have sufficient knowledge of Health and Safety gained at a construction specific course of at least two days duration (then there is a list of course content they list as a minimum requirment) and 2) they must demonstrate having attended training including an understanding of behavioural issues, leadership and effective intervention skills. It must include delivering effective presentations (eg Tool Box Talks), role play etc. Both 1 and 2 need to have some form of testing and certification. All effective from January 1 as outlined in the press release of 2 September 2009 on their web site.
UKCG will not recommend any courses and the final arbiter is the Principal Contractor.

Has anyone done any preparation for this and if so, who and what training are you using please? Has anybody received any specific communication from either the UKCG or any of ther members?

Thanks for any input.

The UKCG publicised this last year.

The training standard set out leaves several options open to contractors. The most popular is probably the CITB Construction Skills accredited 2 day Site Supervisor Safety Training Scheme (known as the SSSTS).

Many training providers will offer this either in-house or through open courses.

Use the CITB, it has been going around long enough for all company's to have had notice of the equirements. as a company you should be able to prove that your supervision is adaquate for the task in hand, how have you managed this previously.

Shaun

I am sure I answered this on the Members Forum.

Not to worry yes we have had communication from the UKCG and have had a couple of our Supervisors on the SSSTS course.

One of the UKCG companies has been requiring this supervisor standard for about 6 months now.

It is another load of rubbish from the UKCG as once again they are not practicing what they preach.

Our business is the Erecting and Dismantling Tower Cranes.

Our Supervisors and Erectors hold NVQs in Erection and Supervising this role along with 30 years experience and also holders of the CITB Appointed Person, also manufacturer trained cannot under the new system supervise this operation under the UKCG guidelines?

I can supervise as I hold a CSMSCertificate but have none of the above.

We had a TC to erect on a UKCG site that has already started this system . As none of the qualified persons were available a Carpenter with the SSSTS Cert was allowed to be the Supervisor?

Sorry to appear negative but this is just another one of these ideas thought up by mindless wonders who have probably never been on a Construction Site.

Merry Xmas to everyone.

Alex

Hi there

We have trained all our site supervisors in the 2 day CITB course and our Project Managers have all gone on the 5 day course. We are also requiring our sub-contractors we use frequently to do the 2 day course where they act as site supervisor for us. It is costing us but hey.... it's all the big contracts we're chasing.
