Depends on the confines of the site. Not all sites are enclosed however, it should be realistic to the nature of the project.

put yourself in a position of 'need' and take it from there e.g. its only a short distance is it not?

Its interesting that in an office people expect to walk only a few metres but its expected that joiners and the like to walk miles!

Clearly you think there is an issue with the distance. maybe tell us the distance then people could offer an opinion. i think we are dealing with adults and not children so i would expect a certain level of self control as and when they would need to use the toilet. i would have thought the site manager wouldn't want the workforce tramping for ages to use the toilet instead of working. i walked a 15 mile walk the other day in the countryside and i didn't pass one toilet so maybe anything over 15 miles lol

The travel times used to be 10 minutes for transient sites.

Dont forget the requirements within CDM 2007 Regs Schedule 2 and within the new HSE Construction Information Sheet 59.

Normally the toilets are between the construction site and the car park. Don't forget, it's good business to have the toilets close by as any time spent walking to the facilities is time lost on the job itself. I don't mean to be "it all comes down to money" about it but the toilets should be as close as possible, for a variety of reasons.

You made a spelling error with FACILITIES, but please don’t be embarrassed as a few forum members assumed that the correct spelling for TOILET is F-A-C-I-L-I-T-Y.

Noting that you cover the South Wales area your posting could be regarding any one of the two largest construction sites in Wales at this time. One being in Newport and the other in Pembroke and having worked in both of them I can comment on the welfare facilities, so large that they are officially named “the village” are close to 5 star, loosing half a star for being just too far away.

I can understand the PC’s logistical problem as the village can only be positioned at one end or the other (or one end only in Pembroke) and not in the middle for various obvious reasons. It is just one of those situations when one and all have to give and take and not turn the drama into a crisis.

Many contractors have calculated walking times and added these times to the official break times and clocking off times. This alone is an average 1hr 15mins of lost production to the employer and also often results in many employees having shorter rest periods, as there were constant rumours of employees being docked for not returning to their work areas within the allocated time but I would like to think that allowances were made for the averagely slower.

Hugo has mentioned CDM 2007, schedule 2 and I wonder if the client (ACOP 61) would have responsibilities when the location of welfare facilities created a great loss of man-hour productivity because of the nature and logistics of the site.
Just a thought!

[thanks phil
the client has 3 sites close to each other within 10-15 mis walk. two of the sites are difficult to place full welfare on so the proposal was to use the 3rd sites welfare. the sites will no doubt be visited by HSE at some point, so thats why i was looking for an acceptable distance /time to travel for welfare i vave looked through the CDm regs ACop and could not see a specifed distance
thanks
