I have been informed by our PC that he requires our banksman to stand behind a Heras fence whilst the trench's for foundations are dug.
IMO the banksman will not be able to carry out his duties, look for unknown underground services as trench is dug. Usual precautions taken, CAT scan, drawings etc.
Have been in industry for 30 yrs and never seen or heard of banksman falling in whilst carrying out this operation.
Have any of you any thoughts as to how you can prevent banksman falling into trench.

Stevel,

Do you know why he fell in?
I have first hand experience of this. I was acting as a banksman a considerable time ago and someone shouted me. I turned around and for some reason still unknown to me took a couple of steps back. I fell into the trench. It wasn'nt a very nice experience. approx 14feet deep by 10 feet wide.

You could give consideration for a lightweight platform that would span the trench, with rails back and front. Give consideration too the reach of any back actor.

All the best with your solution.

Sorry have not worded this very well. Nobody has fallen in the trench. But the safety manager of our PC wants precautions in place to prevent it from happening. The trench is 6 ft x 2ft 6" (old money). Ground conditions at top tarmac with sub base, so not likely to collapse under foot. Ground conditions in trench clay. Due to depth have said no entry to excavtion, watch bucket from top.
