Dear all
While looking for employment,I have decided to go for self employment in health and safety advisor by giving small businesses, local council etc that need fire risk assessment, risk assessment, safety audit, inspection e.t.c for free so that i can practice my skills.
Any advice how to start?
thanks

make sure you have the relevant insurances this will be required in the unlikely event that anything hits the fan, even if doing this for free.
Try you local chamber of commerce they may be able to help, I am sure there will be a lot take you up on the offer even if the choose to do nothing with the advice.
Free you say !!! I have a few audits and inspection next week, how are you fixed for doing them while I spend an hour conducting watching Jeremy kyle ?

Free!!!!!!! Not sure that is a good idea, even with insurance. Additionally, practising your skills on your own I believe is not advisable, being a 'buddy' with someone who can verify your work is different. Furthermore, working for free does is a sure way of ensuring wages in our industry are not the best. Like dennish says..... you can work for my clients through me for free if you like, while I have the money, cracking idea that.

This working for free idea is a very serious situation especially so as no other profession does such a thing and once people have something for free they do not want to pay for it thereafter
'buddying', shadowing and similar is a good idea so U can help as U go along and the buddy can also give U help so both gain from the experience. However be very careful to make sure that your chose buddy is a person of integrity as many take all and give noting in return

thanks bob
I understand comment,Still looking for shadowing opportunity but no success at the moment.that the reason i decided to go for that perhaps i can gain contact by that process. Truly its hard to get even voluntary, shadowing health and safety work.I am getting frustrated with that.. but i am still hoping.

Have you thought of doing an Internship. I took part in an Internship in Ireland and got a job at the end of it...win win situation for all...

I understand where the original poster is coming from and also some of the comments form other posters about working for free goes against the grain. However is working for free not what a large number of trade union health and safety representatives do ?
