Watch out for Loughborough courses, sent one of the team on course, very poorly run and lack of administration and support.

I assume you mean the Institute of Ergonomics?
I was eyeing them up myself

Jonathan

The University of Derby run a two-year part time M Sc in Ergonomics and may also offer one by distance learning.

Ergonomics is difficult to learn (and to teach) well in short courses, as the theory is complex - drawn from several disciplines - and requires continuous application, preferably with a professional supervisor, before it 'clicks'.

Nonetheless, the free seminars offered by HumanTech and Auburn Engineers are often very useful

Thanks i have been in contact with someone regarding some of the tools used for assessing such as MAC, Art etc. My intention was to learn these tools then apply what i have learned at the company i work for. Area's i'm particularly interested in are repetitive motions and manual handling. I'm relatively new to my role so all advice is appreciated.

In that case would a "train the trainer" in manual handling be more appropriate?

I recently underwent ergonomic assessment training in November last year as part of my employers plans to assess all tasks carried out on site and found it to be an eye opener.

It is amazing the amount of tasks that pose a problem to an individual which can develop into a long term health problem.

The course itself was a 1 day practical and using specially developed soft ware that gives each task a rating of low to high risk of injury.

Each task is evaluated by assessing the positions adopted by an individuals throughout.

It may be worth exploring a bespoke training package which can be used for any type of work environments.

Hi Jonathan,

If you are only after some guidance as to how to apply some tools to carry out a rapid assessment of work related musculoskeletal disorders, maybe you may wish to look at this web http://ergo.human.cornell.edu/default.htm. Click on the guide & information tag and you will find a good range of downloadable resources.

Regarding formal training/qualifications, the University of Derby and the University of Nottingham run distant learning certificates, diplomas and masters in ergonomics and human factors. The HSE (HSL) used to run ergonomics workshops; it'd be worth exploring this route too.

Hope that be of any help, if not, keep posting.

Best regards,

Javi.
