Hi Does anyone have any advice/ guidelines they could recommend for developing cash handling procedures at work place to cover our own staff, cash in transit vans etc. Nothing is coming up when I search www.iosh.co.uk website. Thanks

Undertake a good risk assessment [to include a proper task analysis as should be standard practice] as this should give U all U need - if U go this route U will have the knowledge yourself
As an example in the past school dinner ladies [people] in one of my areas used to take the cash to the bank but after consulting the local police with regards to the increased mugging etc. in their general district [among other things] it was decided to use a cash collection company to call at the kitchens which then released the dinner ladies to undertake other work this resulted in a win win situation noting that there are lots of things that can be done today to reduce the amount of cash that is around
Remember its a muggers, thief's etc. full time job to obtain cash by what ever means and sanctions against them are not very good so it is not a joke especially so as professional criminals are usually cleaver as well as other things and day to day staff are just not capable of managing an attack against their person
NB:I find that the police today are not as helpful as they were and crimes are not recorded in the way that they used to be

Be unpredictable - use a variety of staff, times, routes, vehicles.
Take proacative steps to reduce actual cash transaction wherever possible - card transactions, online.
Transfer the risk to professionals by using cash handling companies.
As Bob U says: take a good hard look at where your exposures are and fix them.

David offers good advice. Also ensure that lodgement slips etc are completed before leaving the premises so that the envelope only has to be dropped in the quick lodgement box.

We also use a taxi for transport to and from the bank where not within short walking distance.
