Hey all,
I'm new to IOSH, i'm after a few pointers if anyone can help.
At present i'm a heating engineer working for a local authority in Teesside (NE England) Luckily my employer has quite a strong QMS for safety so i've gained quite alot of knowledge from their H&S training matrix. Having reached "top of my game" as a heating engineer im looking to turn my interest in OHS into a long term career.
Im currently on track to complete NEBOSH General Cert OHS and have just sat my NGC1 (results pending). Unfortunately my employer isnt really able to offer me any formal health and safety training or support so im struggling to get the experience employers look for.
I'm 25 so have a long career ahead of me, but im just wondering if anyone can offer any advice on doing something that will really make an employer take interest in my CV. I have considered joining IOSH (i presume i would remain only an affiliate member until i get my certificate and more experience) but would this really have much of an impact for potential employers?
Any info or support anyone already in the industry can offer me would be massively appreciated.
Many thanks,
Jonny

Hi Jonny
We all have been in your shoes before, yes I would consider joining IOSH as employers would be looking for practitioners who are members of a professional organisation. Once you achieve your NGC try to get experience either through shadowing or even voluntary work to gain some experience then you can move up to TECH Iosh.
When you apply for roles you will find fellow candidate will have TECH Iosh as a minimum and may hold other qualifications as well, employers like H&S practitioners with experience in there industries, so why not try the likes of British Gas or the construction industries.
It can be hard and frustrating at times to get on the bottom rung of the ladder however was you get there you will gain valuable experience.

At 25 you have plenty of time on your side so don't give up if it seems to take a while to get what you want.
If possible also look to be flexible because if you can work further afield it will increase the opportunities open to you.
Once you have your quals register with staff agencies who specialises more in H&S and they will give you advice of how to write/style your CV, as well as looking out for suitable jobs for you. Of course also continue to look for jobs yourself.
The key thing will be to bring more of the H&S aspects of your career out in your CV. Of course it will show you were a heating engineer but your CV will highlight the H&S aspects of your work as much as you can.

hi Jonny,
You are on right track by doing NGC, Since your current employer have a good Safety Standard, I am sure you are familiar with the safety requirements in your work zone, Try to get into it in details, be volunteer safety rep in your work area if agreed... and once you complete NGC, join IOSH may be as AIOSH and you can move on to Tech IOSH Later with exp..
Good Luck

Thanks all for the replies.
Unfortunately my employer isnt in a position where they can allow me to shadow anyone from our h&s team so ill have to try and find someone local who could ideally let me shadow on a weekend if possible. Failing that i can take annual leave from work and possibly assist on a weekday.
I think the key is to focus on finishing nebosh cert and find some way of getting the all important experience. It is a crowded market after all and i can appreciate their are a lot of newcomers to the industry trying to get a foot in the door.
Thanks again,
