I registered with Tandem and got an interview the same day they do alot of office based work but health and safety for councils etc

get on the web and look at the IOSH mag etc. as there are hundreds of agencies U can try NB: Hundreds there may be but good ones are quite another matter, however spread your net wide as the wider U cast the more chance U have of getting work

I uploaded my CV to Reid Recruitment (I have nothing to do with them) and other recruitment sites.
HR of the firm I work for now head hunted me by checking CVs for the word NEBOSH.

A lot of company's will not pay the recruitment agencies fees and actually stipulate this in their adverts. If you are able to do it the hard way and find a way around agencies you will have an edge. However that is why so many adverts are vague, to say the least.

Chris I agree Chris, but my firm did not advertise the job on Reid Recruitment. They paid a one off fee to them to scrutinise the CVs and contacted me directly. So register and let firms find you.

I have been in the same situation- I just kept going and kept applying, then out of the blue 2 jobs I applied for on the same day gave me interviews and both offered me FTC, the one I chose is reviewing my contract in the new year so hopefully there will be good news there- if not I've had a great year of learning!

Register with Shirley Parsons, not only that they focus specifically on H&S, but also very personable and try to match you to your requirements and suitability (in my experience).

It would not do you any harm to try to "sell yourself" on this forum
You will need to post more details than you did on your previous attempt though
Bad time of the year to be job hunting - I sympathise

kojo, 30 applications and no interviews must be very disheartening.
Maybe your CV and accompanying letter could be improved - needs to be carefully tailored for each application. Do you have someone who is able to cast a critical eye over them prior to submitting? Also a scattergun approach may not be the best. Perhaps better to identify jobs that 1) you want and 2) fit your capabilities.
It may be tempting (and understandable if facing no income) to try for everything that is available but repeated rejections are damaging for anyone's ego
As Walker says, very little interest in recruitment at present but should pick up in Jan.
Best of luck in finding something you want very soon.

Dealing with HSE recruitment agencies is a bit of nightmare. I've yet to come across a recruiter that isn't just a sales person with limited knowledge about H&S!!! Try linked in, there are always jobs advertised on there and if you see something posted by a recruitment agency try and get as much info out them about the job, business, location, etc... That way you might be able to workout who is recruiting and then contact them directly

Kojo, why not ask partner, parent, child, neighbour, religious minister or anybody who coulkd recognise whether the CV as written will be likely to attract interest from the recruiter. They do not have to be a H&S nor HR specialist and perhaps as an "outsider" can be more objectively critical.
Certainly each application needs to have its own unique letter. Some recruiters attach as much importance to the letter as the CV.

its not just the CV it is those reading it that require educating as unfortunately many have no idea as to what the role is all about and agencies are no better in most cases but they [agencies] are but one means of getting yourself noted NB: get around all your local industrial [if there are any left] estates as U never know what U may pick up
Money: I was offered £15:00 per hour recently for reasonably high risk work and declined it but found out that another H&S person took the role - and that is the problem as we do not stick together when it comes to pay in the same way as others do and that damages the occupation in my view

Try convincing the job centre you can not apply and take a job because it is not paying the appropriate wage ! You can be more choosy if moving from one job to another, but that is not always the case.

Have you registered with LinkedIn it’s like face book for p professionals many recruiters / agencies advertise and recruit directly from there as with the others advise you will need to focus your cv to the specific job role and job description

Yes. Be completely honest when answering. It will help to "categorise" you (Apparently, I'm a "Specialist", very closely followed by "Teamworker"). When you look at the definitions of these roles, it helps people to get a handle on how you like to work, and where you would best fit into a team.
This should help you (and a future employer) to understand your strengths, work style preferences and so on.
If you get the chance, do Myers-Briggs as well.

Hi All
Looking for some advice - got an interview for EHS manager position in a food industry next week.
There will be no presentation at the interview and I have started reading about the company to familiarise myself.
I am not sure if the interview will be based on competency based.
I am told one of their main customers is M & S and their keen to achieve their 'Plan A' gold status.
Any information will help.

Difficult without knowing which part of the 'food industry' the interview is for but consider; HACCP, Slips trips falls, Skin problems, MSD's/WURLDs, Noise, COSHH (dusts and chems for cleaning), DSEAR, Cuts, the usual machinery stuff, LOLER, workplace temperature (hot or cold), fire especially if the unit has composite panels, ammonia chillers, enviro stuff too maybe COD/BOD/Susp solids in effluent etc etc, waste disposal, packaging wastes, any accreditations they may already have - if they are M&S suppliers I guess they may well have 14 and 18 as well as 9001 management systems in place or want them bringing in.
Remember if its food for humans then it will generally be a fast moving environment, with quick turnaround of product and obviously hygiene critical issues.

When I worked for m and s Plan A was more the targets and objectives for the future- it may have changed since I left. It covered all aspects of the business when I was there. I remember it being quite heavily environmental in the year I left

Pay to have your CV / LinkedIn rewritten.
I was dubious about it and never kept my profile up to date and ignored network requests. I was made redundant last Jan and it was my updated LinkedIn that got me my current role. I get messages and recruiter calls every week.
My employer use a LinkedIn search tool that data mines all the profiles to cherry pick potential candidates, so do a lot of recruiters.
Spend an hour a day on LinkedIn, join groups, post and comment, create a network.

Good luck with second interview.
My Local Authority has a Development department and they reviewed my cv for me and helped me to re-design it.
They said I had all the info but never actually mentioned I was a H&S Adviser!
There was no cost.
Agencies then contacted me after I sent them my cv offering, at a price to update it!
I got a job with first people I sent the initial revamp to.
Didn't take any account of what the agencies said as their inital comments were opposite to Councils advice.

Just to update you all, I have had 4 interviews since my last post. 3 of those I went to second stage interview. They all seem to like me but they have all turned me down.

The fact you are getting an interview at all, suggests you are fairly attractive to employers.
At the final cut its just down to luck.
Every interview adds to your experience eventually it will happen......... Most likely 2 job offers in the same week!!
I realise you might be thinking - "its ok him saying that!"
Its no consolation, but most of us have been there.

Although not always possible try and get as much feedback as you can, for areas you can strengthen. A few years ago I was at second interview stage with one other person and they didn't even bother to let me know I was not successful. But not all company's are that rude.
If not, do you know someone who is used to interviewing to give you a mock interview and feedback ?
As Walker said you are close. It may just be the colour of your socks that makes the difference on the day.

You might want to look back in the old posts - about 18 months I think, for "stuie's blog" when he was in a similar situation; it makes depressing reading but there was a happy outcome.
