Hi Susan,

I too am in the exact same situation as yourself. Experience is the real deal maker i have found when applying for jobs.

What i am doing for extra experience is taking annual leave from my day job and voluntarily shadowing H&S practitioners with the time. Its not ideal to use my holiday allowance the way that i am but its a necessary evil to try and get that little bit more "hands on" experience to put into the CV.

I am going to look at trying to get as many relevant courses under the my belt as possible too (finances permitting!)

Hi all

I can sympathise with you here, when I was starting out I lived in in NE Lincolnshire and opportunities were few and far between.
I had to apply for positions in London, as they seem more willing to give young persons without relevant experience a chance.
I ended up getting a position and travelling back home at wkends, glad I did it though as I managed to get my foot in the door!

Have been in the same boat, I am 8 months into a 12 month contract after doing everything I could for 18 months- the usual line of " sorry but you don't have the experience". I have started to look for other jobs as my contract is a little up in the air at the minute and feel more confident with my cv and practical understanding. My position is not 100% health and safety, my manager has been great so its probably around 85% h/s 15% pa instead of 50/50, but an admin type role may be something to consider aswell?

Is there anything in your current role you could get involved in?

I have self funded 5 courses so far, currently an auditing course and my Diploma, and have taken annual leave for it (this year i used 18 of 25 days on courses/exams etc) so I know that feeling too. All I would say course wise is to not take on too much in one go- it's sometimes a case of matching knowledge and experience together to suit what you are doing at the time.

Its a good start you are having now.. Don't just try to add on qualifications without getting more experience as of now... I am sure that there will be fresher role waiting for you out there.
