Hi all, I guess you have all been asked a Million Times, but I need some pointers on getting a start within Health and Safety work, I have sent endless e-mails with little or no response.

So how do I get a start, can someone please advise,

Many thanks

Tell us a bit more about yourself, Andy. Do you have a job at all at the moment, if so what is it and in what kind of organisation (large or small)? What is your work background so far? What H&S qualifications do you have?

Hi Kate,
Thanks for your reply to my question.
At present I am a self employed joiner working within shop fitting, I do have other fields I have worked in, Telecomms and engineering.

I only hold my NEBOSH general at this time and am looking for a company that is willing to help me along with further studies, I am just completely stuck as to were to go, as I just seem to draw blanks with each avenue I go down.

I thank you and hope there are some pointers you could give me to help me achieve my goals,

thanks Andy.

Hi Andy

Get your feet wet by going for a dual role and gain experience from there, that's what I did many moons ago and doors started to open from there. You hold the NEBOSH General which is a good starting point but you need to take this further into a full blown NEBOSH Diploma. My company would not pay for the Diploma so I successfully achieved it off my own back and never looked back. Trust me it's worth it in the end. Good luck eh.

I suggest using the contacts you'll have made among your clients to look for some entry-level or temporary positions that may be around without being widely advertised. I wouldn't hold out for getting an employer to support you to do the Diploma (some will, some won't), as getting experience is even more vital than getting further qualifications. And talk up your work history as it will have given you lots of relevant practical knowledge.

Hello Andy,

Contact all the persons you have previously worked for, and ask if they can take you on. Failing that, there must be construction sites/ factories around you locally, knock on their doors and see what they say.

Andy, the NEBOSH GC is a great starting point & one avenue you may wish to follow is to attend your local IOSH meetings or any other similar ones e.g. Occupational H&S Groups, Construction Safety Groups, etc.

I see that you are self-employed, so try & invest some time in attending some of these meetings; get to know some of the people who attend; do some "networking" & do not be afraid to stand up during the obligatory "Any other business" & offer your services!

Good luck!

Zyggy

Andy try getting some unpaid volunteer work so that you are showing you are willing and to gain some experience.
