I attended the IOSH seminar in London on the 23rd March and found it very positive in reiterating my goal to become a safety practitioner. Having recently completed my Nebosh General Certificate and now studying for my Nebosh Diploma, I would welcome any career advice and would be very happy to offer my services either on a voluntary or part time basis as the diploma course requires 1 week each month of study at the British Safety Council in Hammersmith.

Contact IOSH if you are not already a member as they now have a volunteer portal. I think its is early days for the portal yet, but you may be able to get some advice.

If you have any experience at all in health and safety, make sure it is on your cv, also tailor your cv and letters of application to suit the fact you want to work in health and safety. Also, consider partial safety roles such as admin as these can potentially open doors for you also. Any opportunity you have to undertake some kind of safety based work, do, but also know your limit.

Hi Tom Employers that are looking for someone to fill a H&S position are looking for two things - qualifications and experience. It is possible to get a load of academic qualifications without ever gaining any work experience. I recommend that along with your NEBOSH certification /diploma you somehow gain some work experience in a H&S related role. You may have to do this in an unpaid role as part of a work experience scheme. I suggest that you attend some local IOSH branch/district meetings and do a bit of networking and ask if anybody can provided you with some unpaid work experience in a shadowing role. Some of us at my IOSH district group do this and so far everybody that we have mentored have managed to get a full time role in H&S. You can also include the work experience on your CV. Find your nearest IOSH branch on this website. Membership tag - our branches. Good luck Tom

SHV Thank you for that information. The problem I have at the moment is trying to convince companies that I have the skills but maybe lack experience in a H&S role. Tom
