Hi I was wondering if anybody could offer me any advice as to actually getting on the Health and Safety ladder in terms of finding a job. I have had several interviews and although I feel I am doing well, when I receive feedback it can be negative. This is frustrating as I hold the NEBOSH Diploma and am currently undertaking the IPD programme to gain chartered status. My current job role is not a health and safety position although I am very active in my spare work time, undertaking the role of shift HSE rep, carrying out workplace inspections, audits etc etc. Any advice would be most welcome. In addition are there any courses on the market that deal in Health and Safety management systems and in particular OHSAS 18001. I feel this is a week area for me and have fell short when asked about my experience or knowledge on this subject. Thanks in advance

It is more experience you need, and there is no short-cut to that.

You may have to pare down your job expectations and initially look at a lower role and learn from doing that job over the next year or two before progressing up.

You can keep doing courses as much as you like, but you are competing against those with more experience than you. these people have experience with actually using OHSAS 18001 in a work environment rather than a certificate saying they know the theory..

I worked for almost 30 years as a Welder Fabricator all around sites in London as well as workshop work, Health and safety has been very important to me especially with the site work, I just took an interest and started doing the health and safety bits for the Company i was working for, Gradually over time nearly 6 and a half years now I'm finally getting qualified and getting my recognition. Now I'm loving all the courses, i have a nice office for the company i work for and have my own Limited company for which i do the Health and Safety for a further 2 engineering companies. If you keep at it and showing that your keen your more likely to be able to progress to the next level. Thats what I've been doing, With my level 6 and Tech IOSH membership pending, things can only get better, but it need you to do it.

Good luck and keep us upto date with your progress :-)
