A job requires Nebosh diploma as minimum qualification, how do you evidence that a B.Sc Occupational Health and Safety (IOSH accredited) is at least equivalent to the nebosh diploma? Is there any document/framework that sets this out?
The B.Sc degree is a level 6 qualification.

I have a degree in Environmental Health which is accepted as a cognate degree by IOSH. I've been CMIOSH for years but still have to explain to potential employers, and so-called specialist H&S recruitment agencies, why I don't have - & don't need - a NEBOSH diploma. I now have a stock sentence that I put onto application forms - along the lines of 'my qualifications have been accepted by IOSH for membership & I have been a Chartered Safety & Health Practitioner for X years'. If they still need further explanation after that, I begin to wonder if it's the job for me...

I went for a position at a south coast unitary council BBC - during the interview process they assumed I had a nebosh diploma, but in fact had an MSc - level 7. When quizzed the health and safety 'professionals ' were surprised and implied i was there by default ( on the application I ticked the 'box' and added a comment because we no automated response available ). In short idid not get the job.... And wondered who was advising them about recruitment... Very sad

thanks for sharing your experiences. i have also emailed IOSH to see if they have any framework that looks official enough to present to a potential employer. I will share with you if they come back with anything significant.
I will also consider doing the NEBOSH diploma exam in the future...just to fulfill all righteousness!

It so evident that some employers prefer specific qualification over others...and seems still the most famous one still leading the market!but that is not applicable in any industry or all over the world!

It's sad that people with BSc, MSc and Post grad Dip are often passed over by employers who have been brainwashed into thinking there is nothing beyond Nebosh cert / diploma. I think this is the way things are going - just look at job adverts and you'll see for yourself.

I am hopeful that IOSH can help raise the profession to bring graduate based. My understanding us that a NEBOSH diploma is a level below ann MSc , with many entry requirements at MSc requiring a first degree.
Employment agencies I suggest need to play their part?

There was a time when NEBOSH was king, but not any more. Most job adverts ask for NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent. With a cognate degree in h&s I would hope recruiters and prospective employers are able to see this is at least the equivalent of a BSc/MSc - if not, more fool them and I would not want to work for such a company.

I have always asked for Diploma or equivalent when advertising roles. Many of my team have either an MSc or have gone down the NVQ route for their qualifications. We need to educate employers as many do not know what they are looking for!

I would go further, I would want the senior health and safety person to understand broader business issues.. Silos are being diluted and would prefer to achieve this by raising the bar elsewhere.

Not sure why this thread has turned into a rant about employers. The OP asked how to compare qualifications, which was answered in #2.

Hi WatsonD - I didn't think I was ranting - but point taken! Nikki
