which course to do?

Hi,

long story short, I'm looking at a course to get onto the HS career ladder. Do I need to do the IOSH Managing Safely course and then the NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety -or can I just do the second course?

I have a degree in Ergonomics but was unable to get experience so pottered around different roles. I'm also concerned about the fact I am currently unemployed and the NGCOHS has a practical section to be carried out in the workplace.

any advice is greatly appreciated.

Hi there,

You are better looking at the NEBOSH General or NCRQ Certificate in Applied Health and Safety.

The NCRQ is proving very popular and is self directed. worth looking into.

The practical section of the NGC will be an inspection of a work area. When I did mine the college set up one of their workshops for us to look around. You don't need to use your own workplace, your Training provider will help you arrange this.

Have you considered doing a distance learning H&S Course? I did the PG Certificate in health and safety risk management from Strathclyde Uni after doing a Masters in Ergonomics and wanting to expand my knowledge into that area. I can't remember the minimum qualifications required (so whether you'd get on it with your degree) but might be worth a look.

The course is hard work and involves a lot of essay writing so requires a high degree of discipline to keep on top of everything but might just give you the edge over other job applicants (I know it did when I was seeking a new job 9 years ago!).
