Hi Anuj88, I don't think your question's very clear. What course are you talking about? Are you asking what qualifications people gained before getting their current job?

Hi Spencer, I was talking about the NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health & Safety and also the NCRQ Level 6 Certificate in Applied Health and Safety. I wanted to know if those who did the course were able to get a job/experience at the end of it. If you have any advice, I'd greatly appreciate it.

I have the NCRQ Level 6 certificate, and to be honest that on its own will not get you a job if you have no experience unless they are looking to take on a Trainee. Ideally with any job in Health and safety, Experience is a priority, I'd been doing health and safety for around 7/8 years now and its only recently i've taken qualifications, mainly because the company i was working for were just happy with what i could do. But i wanted to gain qualifications myself as now more and more companies we do business with are asking for Qualifications I paid for the courses myself and my IOSH membership, and now i have the learning bug I've done other courses like Environmental and Accident Investigations. At the end its all about selling yourself the More experience and the more you can do will get you a decent position, its easier doing the experience first and then sailing through the courses as opposed to the other way round!

Everything is a balance. It took me over a year after getting my general and fire certs before landing my first role- mainly due to lack of experience. I've self funded almost all of my qualifications which seems to be a hit with potential employers, but know there have been times where they have wanted someone more able to hit the ground running. There are opportunities out there, they just might not be the most prestigious or highly paid to start with- I was a PA/ H & S administrator that became more of an advisor, and in my current role I started as a trainee and am now a coordinator in a much more focused role which I never really considered when i first became interested in H & S. I would try and get any experience you can and make sure your cv and any letters of application reflect what you have done.
